Ross and Rachel sat at "The Lazy Harp", looking at a half-eaten delivery of fish and chips.
Ross was explaining the digestive system of a pigeon, as he does. Rachel stared into space, her mind far away. "Did you hear about Mrs. O'Malley's cat?" Rachel blurted out, interrupting Ross mid-sentence.
Ross, slightly annoyed, shook his head. Before he could answer, Rachel continued, "It just…disappeared! One minute it was there, the next, poof! Gone."
Ross, never one to miss an educational opportunity, launched into a complicated explanation of how cats are predators and sometimes wander off, using very complex words.
Rachel, bored, picked at a chip. "Maybe it went to elementary school," she said with dry humor, hoping to stop the lecture. Ross paused. Elementary school? For cats?
He tried to imagine a cat learning its ABCs. A small tear rolled down his cheek from laughter. Rachel smiled.
After a moment, she gently changed the topic to something less scientific. “I need to order more flowers for the shop. Would you help me?
Ross gladly agreed. Anything was better than imagining feline academics.
”Actually,” said Ross “I need to go to the elementary school to pick up some books. You can come along”.
”Sounds interesting,” said Rachel “Maybe I can give a floral design lesson to the kids!
And just like that, their afternoon at the pub smoothly transitioned from pigeons to flowers, all thanks to Mrs. O’Malley’s disappearing pet and a dash of light humor
