Uso di 'how much' e 'how many'

In inglese, usiamo sia 'how much' che 'how many' per chiedere la quantitÃ di qualcosa. La scelta tra 'how much' e 'how many' dipende dal tipo di nome a cui ci riferiamo.

Usiamo 'how much' con i nomi non numerabili, ovvero i nomi che non possiamo contare singolarmente. Questi nomi non hanno un plurale.

How much water do you drink every day? (Quanta acqua bevi ogni giorno?)
How much time do we have? (Quanto tempo abbiamo?)
How much money did you spend? (Quanti soldi hai speso?)

Usiamo 'how many' con i nomi numerabili, ovvero i nomi che possiamo contare. Questi nomi hanno un plurale.

How many apples did you buy? (Quante mele hai comprato?)
How many people are coming to the party? (Quante persone vengono alla festa?)
How many books are on the shelf? (Quanti libri ci sono sullo scaffale?)

Ricorda:

Con 'how much', il verbo si concorda sempre al singolare, anche se la quantitÃ Ã¨ grande. Con 'how many', il verbo si concorda al plurale.

Infine, possiamo usare 'how much' anche per chiedere il prezzo di qualcosa.

How much is this dress? (Quanto costa questo vestito?)
How much are these shoes? (Quanto costano queste scarpe?)

In questo caso, anche se si tratta di un oggetto numerabile al plurale (come 'shoes'), usiamo 'how much' perchÃ© ci riferiamo al prezzo, che Ã¨ una quantitÃ non numerabile.
