Uso di 'much', 'many', 'a lot of'

Queste tre espressioni significano 'molto' o 'molti', ma si usano in contesti diversi.

'Much' si usa con i sostantivi non numerabili, cioè quelli che non si possono contare. Si usa principalmente nelle frasi negative e interrogative.

• I don't have much time. (Non ho molto tempo.)
• Is there much milk left? (È rimasto molto latte?)

'Many' si usa con i sostantivi numerabili, cioè quelli che si possono contare, sia al singolare che al plurale. Si usa principalmente nelle frasi negative e interrogative.

• I don't have many friends. (Non ho molti amici.)
• Do you have many books? (Hai molti libri?)
• How many flowers did you buy? (Quanti fiori hai comprato?)

'A lot of' si usa sia con i sostantivi numerabili che con quelli non numerabili. Si usa principalmente nelle frasi affermative. Può essere usato anche nelle frasi interrogative per offrire o richiedere qualcosa.

• I have a lot of friends. (Ho molti amici.)
• There's a lot of water in the bottle. (C'è molta acqua nella bottiglia.)
• Would you like a lot of sugar in your tea? (Vorresti molto zucchero nel tuo tè?)

Nelle frasi affermative, 'much' e 'many' possono essere usati, ma suonano più formali.

• I have much work to do.
• There are many birds in the sky.

'So much' e 'so many' si usano per enfatizzare una grande quantità.

'Too much' e 'too many' indicano una quantità eccessiva.
