I pronomi interrogativi, com'è facile intuire, vengono utilizzati in lingua inglese nelle forme interrogative. È possibile distinguere tra aggettivi pronomi interrogativi, che fanno riferimento ad una persona o ad un oggetto, e question words, utilizzati di norma per introdurre delle domande. Ognuno di questi pronomi interrogativi segue specifiche regole.

Pronomi interrogativi

Gli aggettivi Pronomi Interrogativi: who, whom, what, which, whose

WHO (chi?)

viene usato solo quando ci si vuole riferire ad una persona ( quindi quando voglio conoscere quella persona ), quando "chi" è soggetto  ( anche se ormai si tende ad usarlo anche quando è complemento oggetto o altro complemento )

Who's Jenna McBride? She's my aunt [tooltip]chi è Jenna McBride? È mia zia[/tooltip]

Who are your best friends? [tooltip]chi è il tuo miglio amico ?[/tooltip]

WHOM (chi ?)

si usa invece quando è complemento oggetto o altro complemento, nelle frasi formali.

Whom did she blame for the accident? [tooltip]chi ha rimproverato per l'incidente?[/tooltip]

Whom did he hire to do the job? [tooltip]chi ha fatto assumere per fare il lavoro?[/tooltip]

è possibile usare 2 forme di costruzione, anche se è consigliabile la forma : who + frase + preposizione ( preposizione  spostata alla fine della frase )

To whom did she speak? [tooltip]con chi ha parlato molto formale[/tooltip]

who are you working with? [tooltip]con chi stai lavorando[/tooltip]

WHAT (che cosa?)

è usato quando è riferito a una specifica informazione ( vorrei sapere di più sull'oggetto )

What is there in that box? [tooltip]che cosa c'è in quella scatola?[/tooltip]

What is the English word for telecomando? It's remote control [tooltip]qual'è la parola inglese per telecomando? è remote control[/tooltip]

WHICH  (quale?)

viene usato quando bisogna effettuare una scelta tra alternative.

Which day do you prefer for a meeting – Monday or saturday? [tooltip]quale giorno preferisci per un incontro - Lunedi o sabato?[/tooltip]

Which drink did you order – the gin or the rum? [tooltip]quale bevanda hai ordinato - il gin o il rum?[/tooltip]

Le question words si usano per introdurre le domande, in inglese sono: how, where, when, why

HOW  (come? / quanto?)

How è usato per descrivere il modo in cui qualcosa è fatto ( voglio sapere il modo )

How do you cook pizza? [tooltip]come si fa a cucinare la pizza?[/tooltip]

How can I learn French quickly? [tooltip]come posso imparare il francese rapidamente?[/tooltip]

How does he know the answer? [tooltip]come fa a sapere la risposta?[/tooltip]

con how si posso usare anche altre espessioni come:

si riferisce ad una distanza

Where (dove?)

si usa quando ci si vuole riferire a un posto o luogo ( vorrei sapere il posto )

Where is John today? He's at work [tooltip]dov'è John oggi? È al lavoro[/tooltip]

When(quando?)

si usa per riferirsi al tempo oppure ad un occasione ( voglio sapere il tempo )

when do the shops close in London? [tooltip]quando fanno i negozi chiudono a Londra[/tooltip]

Why (perchè)

why è usato per chiedere una spiegazione o una ragione.

Why do we need a car? [tooltip]perché abbiamo bisogno di una macchina?[/tooltip]

Why are you always late? [tooltip]perché sei sempre in ritardo?[/tooltip]
