Le preposizioni "in" e "on", in lingua inglese, si utilizzano per lo più per indicare stato in luogo, complemento di tempo e complemento di mezzo. Esistono tuttavia una complessa fraseologia ed un elenco di modi di dire che non sempre seguono le regole già apprese. In alcuni casi, infatti, "in" viene omesso del tutto oppure sostituito dalla preposizione "at", mentre "on" può essere sostituito da "by", "at" oppure "in". Il modo migliore per fissare i concetti è esaminare attentamente gli esempi proposti.

Le preposizioni “in” e “on” possono essere utilizzate per indicare alcune eccezioni.

Attenzione!! “in the dark” può essere anche una figura retorica, che si utilizza per indicare l’essere all’oscuro di qualcosa, o per indicare qualcosa fatto in segreto.

John is planning to accept the job in New York, but he’s keeping Stacy in the dark about it. [tooltip]John sta pensando di accettare il lavoro a New York, ma sta lasciando Stacy all’oscuro di tutto.[/tooltip]
