I numeri cardinali

In inglese ci sono tre modi per rendere lo zero:

- nought nelle numerazioni e nei calcoli

- o |ou| nei numeri che sono normalmente letti cifra per cifra, come i numeri di

telefono, le camere d'albergo, i codici postali, ecc.

- zero nelle scale di misurazione e nel conto alla rovescia

0°C zero degrees centigrade

- Nei numeri dal 21 al 99 scritti in lettere le decine' si uniscono alle unità con un

trattino:

- La virgola separa le cifre delle migliaia dalle centinaia, dei milioni dalle migliaia ecc.

- Hundred e thousand si uniscono alle decine e unità con la congiunzione and.

Non c'è congiunzione tra migliaia e centinaia:

• L'anno non è mai preceduto dall' articolo e le cifre che lo compongono si leggono

a coppie.

Se la terza o la quarta cifra sono zeri, l'anno si legge nel seguente modo:

in 1805 in eighteen hundred and five

in 1600 in sixteen hundred

Hundred, thousand e dozen sono invariabili quando sono preceduti da un numero

o una quantità.

Prendono la -s del plurale quando significano centinaia, migliaia,dozzine in  senso indefinito. In questo caso sono seguiti dalla preposizione of.

there are ten thousand football fans at the stadium today.

there are thousands of football fans at the stadium today.

there are three dozen eggs in that basket.

there dozens of eggs in that basket.
